Arrive, check in and drop your gear. It's time to meet the rest of your Topdeck Iceland crew in the capital, (pronounced 'Ray-kya-viik'). Tonight, we're having dinner and learning why Iceland's nightlife is famous. Pssst: drinks on whoever spots Iceland's famous hidden people.
Reykjavik to Akureyri
Smell ya later Reykjavík, we're heading north to Akureyri (pronounced ah-koo-rare-ee) on one of the most scenic drives this volcanic Island can offer. We're talking lava fields, farmlands, fjords and *gasp* Icelandic horses! This afternoon: will you wander around town with a coffee buzz or try to spot humpback whales from the shore?
Free day in your new fave town. On the table today: floating in geothermal baths (for the softest skin ever), whale watching or a local beer tasting (optional). For the brave, why not try one of Iceland's delicacies, fermented, rotten shark (yum?). Discuss over dinner tonight - it's on us.
-Myvatn Nature Baths
-Shark and Beer tasting at Hauganes
-Whale watching and local beer tasting at Hauganes
Akureyri to Egilsstadir
On the coach, we're heading east to Egilsstaðir (sounds like "Aye-em-stav-ille'). But first, a stop off at Goðafoss, the waterfalls of the Gods. Can you smell the fresh air? No? That's 'cos we're stopping off at Náð - a geothermic park with bubbling mud pools and steaming springs. Waiting for us in Egilsstaðir are incredible views of glacial mountains and Lagarfljót, Iceland's third-largest lake.
Egilsstadir to Kirkjubaejarklaustur
And we're off again, today we head to Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Talk about a tongue twister - thank gosh the locals know this southern town as "Klaustur" (pronounced 'cloister'). This afternoon we're iceberg and glacier hunting with an optional tour of Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs- no biggie! Snaps for anyone who spots a seal!
-Jökulsárlón boat tour
Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Reykjavik
Today we complete the Golden Circle and head back to Reykjavík, but d/w there's plenty of stops along the way. Can you say: Eyjafjallajö Neither can we, but we're stopping in at the info centre for a brief education about this Island mountain glacier. Like waterfalls? Well iceland is full of them and we'll be chasing them today with a stop off at Seljalandsfoss and Gullfoss. Play your cards right and we'll even chuck in a geysir. Our advice? Try not to nap - the scenery on this drive is too damn good!
The trip may end today but at least you have a ton of memories. Swap numbers and get that next adventure planned ASAP.
